This procedure is designed to either minimize the creation of intraocular fluid or enhance the outflow of this similar fluid. In some instances, this surgery will achieve both purposes. At present, the objective of glaucoma surgery is to minimize to normalize intraocular pressure (IOP). There is a high chance that the damage of the optic nerve will be prevented when this objective is achieved. Regardless of treatment, the best method to prevent the onset of blindness due to glaucoma is through early diagnosis. This can be done by a regular checkup with your eye doctor.
The treatment for glaucoma may vary depending on the kind of glaucoma you suffer. For those who suffer from minor glaucoma symptoms, eye drops or pills can be recommended. However, if your IOP has to be minimized to a certain degree, surgery may be suggested. Glaucoma surgery needs to be performed to enhance the outflow of fluids. In some cases, surgery can eradicate the need for glaucoma eye medications. Nevertheless, you may be required to still apply eye drops even after undergoing glaucoma surgery.
Eye doctors have the options to use either a surgical blade or laser to conduct surgery for glaucoma. The first option selected by doctors is laser surgery. If it doesn’t work, then the traditional surgery may be performed. For adults undergoing a glaucoma surgery, there are three usual forms of surgery which includes the flowing:
- Surgery to enhance the outflow of fluid
This involves creating a trapdoor that enables fluid to pour from the eye. Some related procedures include trabeculectomy, tube-shunt surgery, and laser trabeculoplasty.
- Surgery to stop the shutdown of the drainage angle
This involves creating a new opening in the iris that enables fluid to move through the eye. The related procedures are surgical iridectomy and laser iridotomy.
- Surgery to minimize the amount fluid created in the eye
This is the last resort when all other surgeries do not work to enhance the flow of fluid from the eye.
