September is Healthy Aging Month!

September 5, 2018

OSM Healthy Aging Month 2018

It is an ideal time to take a closer look at your lifestyle and habits. The way we live our lives has a direct impact on our longevity and happiness. A good diet and regular exercise can give you more active years as you grow older including prolonging optimum eyesight.

Aging and Our Eyes

Our bodies change as we age and that includes our eyes! Most adults over the age of 40 start to notice difficulty when they try to focus on objects that are close up. This condition, known as presbyopia, is a completely normal aging process and occurs due to a hardening of the natural lens in the eye. Aging also affects the muscles that are used to focus our lens thus making it harder to see those fine print items. Some compensate by moving objects away from their eyes, but eventually, you may need glasses.

Presbyopia will continue as you age making the next step for most bifocal glasses. You may need to update your prescription more frequently to adjust. Some people avoid bifocals and use two prescriptions: one for normal activities and another for things that require working close up such as reading or using a computer.

Tips for Healthy Eyes

There are several precautions you can take to help slow the effects of aging on your eyes such as:

  • Make healthy lifestyle choices that include regular exercise
  • Eat a nutritious diet and maintain a healthy weight
  • Avoid smoking or quit if you have already started
  • Wear sunglasses when spending time in the sun
  • Schedule regular appointments with an ophthalmologist
  • Take a daily eye vitamin to help prevent macular degeneration

Ophthalmic Specialists of Michigan can provide a comprehensive dilated eye exam, address changes in your vision, and help you make the best decisions about your eye health. Call one of our three convenient locations to schedule your appointment today!

Do Eyes Age?

February 24, 2017

OSM Do Eyes Age

Just like the rest of our bodies, our eyes are not impervious to aging. As the years go by, our bodies change, with some systems and tissues weakening over time. Fortunately, healthy habits, a proper diet and regular hydration can help support eye health throughout your life. This can reduce your risk of developing age-related eye conditions like cataracts and macular degeneration.

One of the most common vision problems that occurs as you age is presbyopia, a condition in which a person has trouble seeing objects up close or reading small print. This condition usually occurs in patients aged 40 or older and is fairly easy to address with glasses or contacts. Other, more severe, issues can include cataracts (cloudy areas in the lens), corneal disease due to infection and/or injury, and retinal disorders like retinal detachment (which can cause blindness).

As you age, it is important to keep track of your eye health and any changes to your vision. We recommend patients over the age of 40 see an ophthalmologist annually for a thorough dilated eye exam. The risk of certain conditions can affect your eyes and overall health such as high blood pressure and diabetes and can contribute to the risk of developing eye disease.

If you are experiencing changes in your vision or are over the age of 40, it is time to visit Ophthalmic Specialists of Michigan. Contact OSM to make an appointment today!
