Aging and Our Eyes

Our bodies change as we age and that includes our eyes! Most adults over the age of 40 start to notice difficulty when they try to focus on objects that are close up. This condition, known as presbyopia, is a completely normal aging process and occurs due to a hardening of the natural lens in the eye. Aging also affects the muscles that are used to focus our lens thus making it harder to see those fine print items. Some compensate by moving objects away from their eyes, but eventually, you may need glasses.

Presbyopia will continue as you age making the next step for most bifocal glasses. You may need to update your prescription more frequently to adjust. Some people avoid bifocals and use two prescriptions: one for normal activities and another for things that require working close up such as reading or using a computer.

There are several precautions you can take to help slow the effects of aging on your eyes such as:

  • Make healthy lifestyle choices that include regular exercise
  • Eat a nutritious diet and maintain a healthy weight
  • Avoid smoking or quit if you have already started
  • Wear sunglasses when spending time in the sun

  • Take a daily eye vitamin to help prevent macular degeneration
